What is a false prophet?

Jesus’ words today are very sobering, and one’s that we should pay attention to. We may not think that we listen to false prophets; that would be only for those who follow cults or strange gurus. It is a humbling and necessary question to ask ourselves how do we test the fruit. Is it just listening to those who appear holy and whom we agree with, or is there a deeper discernment required? The fruits of the Spirit are love, joy, peace, understanding, patience, gentleness, self-control, kindness and faithfulness.

So, when we listen to others, it’s a good idea to reflect on exhibited characteristics. For example, is there an air of superiority towards others, contempt, or ridicule?

The Spirit does call us to speak the truth boldly, but we do need to remember the Lord’s words today, and if the fruits of the Spirit are not evident, there may be a call to greater discernment.

Lord, allow us to discern you amid many voices.
