What do you put your trust in?

It can be easy in an affluent society to rely on the plenty that surrounds us and, without realising it, to put our trust in our good jobs and nice homes. Wealth has a way of making us feel invincible, like the ruler of Tyre in the first reading.

But God comes to comfort the afflicted and to afflict the comfortable. Hopefully, our experience this year of the Covid-19 crisis has shaken up our certainties and has made us question: what is the great certainty in our life? What is the bedrock?

If our certainties lie in what we earn or have accumulated, we will be shaken up by what Jesus says today, just as the apostles were. But if we hold our lives and our riches lightly, knowing that only God truly meets our needs, we will be both free and blessed.
