Teacher libarians igniting a love for reading

Natalie Broers, teacher librarian, Mt Carmel School, Yass

Teacher librarian Natalie Broers says school librarians foster a love of reading, entice reluctant readers, and provide a varied collection of literature for avid readers.

“I liked reading throughout my school years,” she explained.

“As a classroom teacher, I enjoyed using books to inform and entertain my students.

This led me to further my studies and complete a Master of Education specialising in Teacher Librarianship. Becoming a teacher librarian has allowed me to make books part of every lesson.”

Natalie said it was wonderful to connect with each student in the school and work with them in the library every week.

She said, “Librarians provide an inclusive and welcoming environment, deliver and facilitate quality learning opportunities, and provide pastoral support to the students.”

“I also enjoy connecting with the wider Mt Carmel School community through various whole-school events.”

What are three books you recommend to children?

  1. Don’t Let the Pigeon series by Mo Willems: This series brings joy to students from kindergarten to Year 6. It consists of fun and engaging picture books featuring a very persistent pigeon.
  2. Marge in Charge by Isla Fisher: Marge is Jemima and Jake’s wacky and unpredictable babysitter. This is a great novel for parents to share aloud or for students to read independently.
  3. Once series by Morris Gleitzman: This is a moving historical fiction series that follows the lives of two children trying to survive during World War 2. It is suitable for older readers.

What are your three favourite books in the world?

  1. Little Women by Louisa May Alcott: This is my favourite of the classics and one I have enjoyed reading more than
  2. The Canberra Gardener by The Horticultural Society of Canberra: I like that this gardening information text is relevant to the local environment.
  3. The Simple Dinner Edit by Nicole Maguire is a recently dis-covered recipe book with some nice, easy dinner ideas.
