Since the September announcement of the sex abuse summit, there has been a great deal of optimistic opinion about its outcomes. The blockage on the Baltimore Bishops’ Conference was a sobering caution, and the situation was further aggravated by Fr Cantalamessa’s limited input on this crisis. Now, Pope Francis seems to be promising more of the same – a “new” catechesis followed by a penitential liturgy and the publication of some new protocols. Given the snail-paced response of our own hierarchy to the Royal Commission, I should probably not have been surprised. The trouble is that my hopes for something meaningful were based on the words of the Pope, and they are now being threatened by the same person. May God help us all.
