Pope Francis appeals for peace and solidarity on anniversary of Hamas attacks
On the anniversary of the Hamas attacks that sparked full-scale war in the Holy Land, Pope Francis addressed the region’s Catholics in a poignant letter dated October 7, 2024.
He expressed deep sorrow over the ongoing conflict, criticizing the international community’s “shameful inability” to stop the violence and provide solutions. With “blood and tears still being shed,” the Pope reflected on this “sad day,” marking a tragedy fueled by growing anger and a thirst for revenge.
He acknowledged the “small, defenceless flock” thirsting for peace, expressing gratitude for their resilience despite the turmoil. The Pope referred to them as “a seed loved by God” and urged them to bear fruit amid darkness, becoming “sprouts of hope.” He called for prayer and fasting as vital actions to seek peace, emphasizing their importance in combating the spirit of evil that incites war.
Pope Francis extended his solidarity through repeated affirmations, reaching out to those suffering from the conflict, including the people of Gaza and grieving mothers. He concluded with heartfelt thanks to those supporting the afflicted and to clergy providing comfort to those in despair.
