Lump of Stone
If your virtue goes no deeper than that of the scribes and Pharisees … (Matthew 5).
But our virtue must go deeper – must it not?
We can’t stay in the same ‘place,’ we have to move and be moved:
In the heart there stirs the basic passion for existence and belonging, for to live humanly is to have a heart.
Turned in on ourselves, the heart becomes a lump of stone: hard, heavy, cold and dead (Father Anthony Kelly, The Sacred Heart Revisited).
Our time is very short.
Make each day a day of the heart.
Amen.
