Look here! Look there!

St. Thomas Aquinas – and many others besides – thought correctly that all knowledge enters via the senses.

Furthermore, they understood that the senses are symbolic. This further cements their reasonable claims.

Jesus is not challenging this view of knowledge when he teaches, that ‘the coming of the kingdom of God does not admit of observation’ (Luke 17).

Rather, he is alerting us to the knowledge obtained via faith.

Faith is a way of knowing:

Understanding grows from the intimate sense of spiritual realities which we experience from sacred scripture (Cf. CCC 94).

The ‘Kingdom is within.’
