Ladder

Try and develop a regular routine for prayer.

If we do, then we open ourselves to the possibility of religious experience.

Jacob had a dream (Genesis 28), in which angels bear witness to the Lord.

Jesus alerts us to the reality beyond dreams:

Amen, I say to you, you will see heaven opened and the angels of God ascending and descending upon the Son of Man (John 1).

Those angels were moving freely up and down the ladder.

Not a bad image for prayer, that ladder.

Up we go, drawn by God.

Down we go, drawn by humanity.
