Face to face with God
Healing, suffering and life after death; all the big questions are raised in the readings today. Tobit weeps out his prayer in distress that seems more than he can bear. At the same time Sarah sobs and prays to live no more. In contrast, the Sadducees in the Gospel are not in touch with any personal anguish but aim to trap Jesus. In his answer Jesus refers to the very nature of God, glimpsed by Moses at the burning bush; he is the God of the living, the one who restores life, gives life eternal and therefore makes sense of all suffering. Those men did not realise they were face to face with God, the ultimate answer to every human need. We too are invited to bring our own need and come face to face with Jesus right now.
Lord help us to be in touch with our need and to meet you there.
