Chair in Law and Liberty to speak at 2024 Oration
The second Tim Fischer Oration for Ethics in Public and Political Life takes place in the Great Hall, Parliament House, Canberra, on Wednesday, 7 August 2024, at 6pm.
Helen Alvaré, Chair in Law and Liberty at Antonin Scalia Law School, George Mason University, USA, will give the Oration.
Helen is a regular contributor in the public square, across many mediums, on the many moral and social challenges we face.
Tim Fischer died in August 2019 after a distinguished career in politics and diplomacy. He was Deputy Prime Minister of Australia from 1996 to 1999 and served with the Australian Army in the Vietnam War.
He was elected to the House of Representatives in 1984 and retired from politics in 2001.
Tim was a man of deep faith, possessing strong public and civic convictions. Among other aims, the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn attempts to arouse in young men and women a deep desire to serve Australia in public and political life.
Student sponsorship for the event is encouraged and facilitated.
John Anderson, previous Deputy Prime Minister of Australia (1999-2005) gave the Inaugural Oration in 2022.
The event attracted a massive crowd of approximately 600 people. Buy your tickets early.
We are at a crossroads in Australia in particular and in the Western World in general.
Fundamental human values are under great strain, and so an overarching societal narrative is becoming opaque.
The Tim Fischer Oration aims to enlighten and encourage us to seek out and promote a free and fair society. Do join us in our noble endeavour.
