Canberra Konkan Community unites for joyful Monthi Fest celebration
The Canberra Konkan Community gathered recently to celebrate Monthi Fest (the Nativity of Mother Mary on September 8th), a significant festival for Mangalorean Catholics.
Konkan is a region on the western coast of India, bound by the river Daman Ganga at Damaon in the north.
The event featured a beautiful Mass by Fr Rembert and Rev. Msgr. Alfred Rayan Dsouza, highlighted by Konkani hymns, which added a touch of cultural authenticity to the service.
In a heartwarming display of intergenerational participation, children took on important roles, reading both the first and second readings and leading the prayer of the faithful.
After the Mass, the celebration continued with a small procession towards Colin Hall. In a touching gesture that honoured tradition and seniority, the eldest member of the community was given the honour of installing the statue of Mother Mary. This was followed by a veneration ceremony in which adults and children participated, symbolizing the community’s collective devotion.
Following the spiritual observances, attendees enjoyed a traditional Mangalorean feast. The meal served on banana leaves is in keeping with customs and features a variety of delicious local dishes, enhancing the cultural experience of the festival.
The community also savoured a traditional dessert, adding a sweet touch to the celebratory meal.
The festivities concluded with cultural activities, allowing community members to showcase their talents and further celebrate their shared heritage.
This celebration seamlessly blended religious devotion with cultural traditions, creating a memorable event for all participants.
From the Mass to the procession, from the communal meal to the cultural performances, the Monthi Fest celebration exemplified the rich tapestry of Mangalorean Catholic culture and the strong sense of community among its members.
