Arm’s Length

Five great discourses occur in Matthew.

The Sermon on the Mount (5-7) is followed by the missionary discourse inMatthew 10.

Opposition to the mission of Jesus is emerging and so the parables become the preferred method of teaching (Matthew 13).

The truth can be deepened in the hearts of the sincere, while the sceptical are kept at arm’s length:

The reason I talk to them in parables is that they look without seeing; listen without hearing or understanding.
