‘Who Am I in God?’: Finding your true self through faith

We have a fundamental crisis on our hands – “a crisis of human identity”, writes Fr. Michael Lim and Dr Sunny Hong.
This is the starting point for their recently released book, Who Am I In God? Discovering Our Christian Identity.
The Archdiocese’s Fr Lim and his co-author Dr Hong explain that our “identity” comprises memories, experiences, values, and relationships that define us, especially when founded on God. Without God, our identity can become distorted, leading to suffering, despair, and confusion.
Is there hope for discovering our “true identity” during the Church’s 2025 Pilgrims of Hope Jubilee Year?
For the authors, the answer lies in scripture and our Catholic heritage. The book begins with a tour of the Church’s key teachings from the Creation in the Garden of Eden through to the seven sacraments we celebrate today from the cradle to the grave.
Readers will find chapter 10 especially useful with its eight-point plan for cultivating an “ecosystem of holiness”.
We can also learn from others, and in part two of the book, we read six true-life accounts of adults working towards their true identities either as Catholics returning to the Church or being received for the first time.
Among them is Fr Lim’s own remarkable conversion story where he chronicles his journey from Buddhism to Christianity and to the Catholic priesthood.
Archbishop Prowse wrote the book’s Foreword and described Who Am I in God? as a “simple and beautiful” work accompanied by “inspirational” testimonies that “propose a deep response by the reader.”
That deep response is likely to get you hooked. Who Am I in God? is an attractive publication, printed on glossy paper and illustrated with some of the great works of religious art by Michelago, Carl Bloch, Batoni, and others.
Fr Lim hopes the “little book” will do “some good for people”. Early sales are going well, and the book is already doing much good for many.
Who Am I in God? will be officially launched at the Canberra Catholic Bookshop at 11 am Saturday 8 February.
