Philippine Ambassador reflects on faith and service as Australian tenure ends

After six years of unwavering dedication as the Philippine Ambassador to Australia, Her Excellency Ma. Hellen De La Vega is preparing to return to her homeland, leaving behind a legacy of service to the Catholic community.
For Ambassador De La Vega, this mission extended beyond the responsibilities of her diplomatic role. It was also deeply rooted in her identity as a Catholic.
“My mission is not just a public mission of working for the government but to be, shall we say, a true Catholic, a true Christian.”
Her years in Australia have been filled with numerous initiatives within the Catholic community, significantly contributing to her sense of purpose.
“I must say that part of our foundation in Canberra has been attending Mass at St Christopher’s Cathedral every Sunday and listening to the Archbihsop’s homilies,” she shared. “Along with the homilies from the other Revered Fathers, we have also had projects with our Filipino priests, such as launching the Order of the Blessed Sacrament.
Her Excellency also reflected on the profound qualities she observed in the Australian community.

“There are two particular attributes that stand out to me about Australians,” she noted. “One is the egalitarian nature of many Australians – people are not overly concerned with your academic qualifications; instead, they focus on what you positively contribute to society.
“The other significant quality,” she continued, “is Australia’s commitment to fairness.”
“If you are dedicated to doing a good job, you will find access and opportunities in Australia.”
“However”, she warned, “I’ve observed a growing trend of secularisation. We all need to consider this as it could significantly impact the future of a multicultural society in Australia.”
Archbishop Prowse echoed her sentiments, praising her service and highlighting her contributions to the Filipino Catholic community in Australia, which continues to grow and thrive.
“The rise of the Filipino community, especially the Catholics in Australia, is unstoppable,” he said.
“And the wonderful leadership you’ve given over the last period, Ambassador, has been exemplary.”
Her example, grounded in compassion and humility, highlights the enduring power of Catholic values in a rapidly evolving world.
Ambassador De La Vega finishes her tour of duty in Australia at the end of this month and will be back in the Philippines to serve as Undersecretary of the Philippine Department of Foreign Affairs.
