Dr. McArdle emphasises dialogue at Canberra and Goulburn Assembly

The Archdiocesan Assembly ‘Festival’ began this Sunday with calls for the guidance of the Holy Spirit. Over 450 participants will gather across multiple sites across the Archdiocese of Canberra and Goulburn.
Dr. Patrick McArdle, Archdiocese Chancellor, expressed excitement about the events to unfold over the week, stating, “We had prayers of the faithful across the archdiocese praying for the Holy Spirit to come and join us, inspire us, and guide us in the process over the coming week.”
Among the highlights of the ‘Assembly Festival’ are Mark Ha’s ordination on Thursday and an ecumenical prayer service at the Cathedral on Friday.
The main event, the Assembly Gathering Day, is a significant occasion that will be held at several locations, including St. Clare’s College, St. Patrick’s Primary School in Cooma, Hennessy College in Young and the Narooma Golf Club.
Archbishop Prowse blessed candles during last Sunday’s Mass at the Cathedral. During the Archdiocesan Assembly, these candles will be used at various hubs, including St. Clare’s in Canberra.
The Chancellor outlined the assembly’s core purpose: fostering dialogue and collaboration among attendees. “We hope to engage with each other, learn from each other, and listen to each other—that’s the primary focus,” he said.
Moreover, Dr. McArdle highlighted the intention to explore the shared beliefs and potential tensions within the diocese.
“What are the convergences? What are the divergences? What do we as an archdiocese agree on unequivocally?” he queried, underscoring the importance of discernment during this pivotal time.
“This assembly, as has been said already, is the beginning of a process,” Dr. McArdle noted, reminding attendees of the historical significance of such gatherings.
“We are building on the shoulders of giants,” he said, reflecting on past diocesan assemblies and the legacy they leave for future generations.
As the assembly progresses, Dr. McArdle hopes for a collective discernment of the Spirit’s fruits.
“Looking towards what the charisms might be that the Lord is calling forth in his church in this church in our church into the future,” he added, setting an optimistic tone for the week ahead.
With the Spirit of unity and purpose guiding participants, the Archdiocesan Assembly promises to be a transformative experience for the faith community, paving the way for future endeavours.
