Lest We Forget
St. Thomas Aquinas (1225-1274) bequeathed to the Church a way of thinking that has proved perennial.
He brought together faith and reason in the search for truth, goodness and beauty.
This is especially true of his reflections on the feast of Corpus Christi – the Body and Blood of Jesus Christ:
Jesus offered his body to God the Father on the altar of the cross as a sacrifice for our reconciliation.
Note the profound insight:
Jesus offered his body to God his Father.
Jesus offered his body for our salvation.
Our Eucharistic celebration each day is just this:
But to ensure that the memory of so great a gift would abide with us forever, he left his body as food and his blood as drink for the faithful to consume in the form of bread and wine.
In the Bible, to ‘forget is to sin.’
Lest we forget.
But how can we forget, now that Jesus has left us something so tangible – his very body and blood:
No other sacrament has greater healing power.
Through it sins are purged, virtues are deepened, and the soul is enriched with an abundance of every spiritual gift.
His greatest miracle!
Amen.
