Our world turned upside down

Rather, whoever wishes to be great among you shall be your servant;…

Just so, the Son of Man did not come to be served but to serve
and to give his life as a ransom for many.”

The rich and powerful are celebrated in our world. We might think we do not want glory, power, or prestige. However, we can test this idea when we think of what it would be like to be a servant.

How do you feel when you hear Jesus suggest that we become a servant? Are you worried that someone will take advantage of you? Do you think you deserve a level of respect more significant than others because of your position, education, or holiness? We don’t like to think of ourselves as people who desire prestige, but Jesus reminds us today to test our hearts. To follow him means to be ready to lay down our lives for others. Jesus asks us to lay down our lives in service, not just to those we love but even our enemies. This is what he did when he gave his life as a ‘ransom for many.”
